Als Schauspieler spielte er in den Filmen <i><a href="Another_Country_(Film)" title="Another Country (Film)">Another Country</a></i> und <i><a href="Das_wahre_Leben_der_Alice_im_Wunderland" title="Das wahre Leben der Alice im Wunderland">Das wahre Leben der Alice im Wunderland</a></i> mit. 1986 bekam er ein <a href="Fulbright-Programm" title="Fulbright-Programm">Fulbright-Programm</a> für ein Film-Studium an der <a href="University_of_California%2C_Los_Angeles" title="University of California, Los Angeles">University of California, Los Angeles</a> in <a href="Los_Angeles" title="Los Angeles">Los Angeles</a>. Bei dem Wettbewerb <i><a href="Columbia_Pictures" title="Columbia Pictures">Columbia Pictures</a> Discovery Program</i> war Wainwright einer der jüngsten Regisseure. Sein Kurzfilm <i>Open Window</i> kam in Hollywood gut an. Nach dem Studium gründete er die Videoproduktionsfirma <i>Fragile Films</i> und führte Regie bei Musikvideos. </p><p>Als Werbefilmer drehte Wainwright in den 1990er Jahren unter anderem einen Spot für <a href="Honda" title="Honda">Honda</a> mit <a href="Anthony_Hopkins" title="Anthony Hopkins">Anthony Hopkins</a> und einen Spot für <a href="Gatorade" title="Gatorade">Gatorade</a> mit <a href="Michael_Jordan" title="Michael Jordan">Michael Jordan</a>. Außerdem drehte er das Werbevideo für <a href="Russland" title="Russland">Russlands</a> erfolgreiche Bewerbung für die <a href="Olympische_Winterspiele_2014" title="Olympische Winterspiele 2014">Olympischen Winterspiele 2014</a>. Das Video wurde in 142 Staaten ausgestrahlt.
